ThorpeWood is a contemporary,
rustic, lodge-style conference center located in the Catoctin
Mountains of Western Maryland. Occupancy of ThorpeWood is
limited by a small sewage disposal area. The NutriCycle System
does not use the sewage disposal area at all, so occupancy
is likely to be expanded in the future.
Air flowing into the Clivus
fixtures keeps them odor-free and sanitized. Unlike a sewage
toilet, Clivus toilets cannot clog or overflow.
The Clivus composters are
located in a utility room behind the main lecture hall. Since
ThorpeWood has just opened, it will be about 5 years before
compost is removed for recycling to vegetation around the
building.
Clivus
liquid fertilizer (composted urine) accumulates in this 600
gallon storage tank.
Twice
per year, Clivus liquid fertilizer is transfered to a mobile
tank by way of a switch-controlled discharge port.
Clivus
liquid fertilizer is used on Thorpewood's hybrid American Chestnut
seedlings (nutrient recycling).
The graywater flowerbed is
landscaped into the slopes accommodating site features. The slate
lids on the irrigation troughs (see irrigation trough detail)
provide convenient walkways. Nutrients and organic matter are
recycled to the root zone and clean water recycled to the ground
water.
